So many painters today cannot draw. As consequence their paintings may look boneless and may not withstand scrutiny. In this six week workshop, I will emphasize the importance of drawing in the development of fundamentally sound painting and try to restore the missing link between drawing and painting. We will learn to use drawings as guidance to our paintings, and we will paint directly from life rather than photos. The approach of teaching will be personal. The exercises in and out of the classroom will be vigorous, so only motivated learners should register. The list of supplies will be provided upon registration.

The human figure is one of the most enduring themes in the visual arts. Figure drawing has been the standard measurement of an artist's skills for hundreds years. It develops, in the artist, a keener sense of observation as the ability to “see” is a large part of what art is about. Weekly Figure Drawing is a set of non-instructional sessions that includes short gestures with several longer poses. For more information, please go to: www.waverlyartisgroup.com.

LEARNING TO SEE drawing class
Instructor: JJ Jiang
Cary Arts Center, Cary, NC
February 6 to March 12, Monday from 7:00 to 9:30PM
An ability to draw is the cornerstone of being an artist. Drawing is about training one’s eyes to see as well as one’s hand to draw. In this six-session drawing workshop, I will use purposefully arranged still life objects to help students to explore lines, shapes, perspectives, and values (tones/shades), etc. The emphasis will be given to observing the relationship among the objects in terms of values. It is my belief that value is more important than color to the success of a painting. The instructor will give demonstrations at the beginning of each planned exercise and use a hands-on approach to help students to get started.
